Holden pays for their drinks, and then leaves the night club. However, these three girls around 30 years old were only amused at Holden’s attempt to appear older and charming rather than interested. The blonde one, Bernice, happened to be an amazing dancer. He ends up dancing with each one of these girls and flirts with them that night. On the other side of the bar are three “ugly” girls.

But, of course, because he is under 21 he is unable to buy one, and settles for a coke. When he takes a seat at the bar, he requests a Scotch and a soda. Holden, still feeling restless, decides to go to the hotel’s night club, the Lavender Room. She refuses, stating that she needs her “beauty sleep.” The two hang up without planning a date and Holden is a bit disappointed. Holden then calls up Faith Cavendish, “who is not exactly a prostitute” and tries to get a drink with her. Holden begins to think of Jane and realizes that even with sexual attraction you can separate that from respect and intimacy. Such “crumby” behavior just seemed very disrespectful. Holden admits that the couple looks like they are having fun, but he cannot see himself ever spitting in someone’s face if he really cared for someone. Looking across to another hotel window, Holden sees a man dressed in women’s clothes and in another room a woman and man spitting mouthfuls of their drinks at one another. Holden then takes a taxi to Edmont Hotel. Holden finds excuses for each one of them and ends up not calling anyone. Once Holden arrives at Penn station, he wants to call someone – his brother, D.B., his sister, Phoebe, his former girlfriend, Jane Gallagher, or even another girl named Sally Hayes whose mother hates him. Holden even lies about his name, stating that he is school janitor, Rudolph Schmidt. In fact, the other boys “wanted” to nominate him for class president if only he had not been too shy. He makes up crazy lies about Ernest, stating that Ernest is the most popular boy on campus. Laughing at the fact Holden, dislikes him intensely because of how he slaps boys in the hall way with his towel. His mother believes that her son is a shy boy. On his way to New York, he meets an attractive older woman who happens to be the mother of one of his classmates, Ernest Morrow. Summary: Holden walks down the train station.
